Martha Boles she/her (Understudy: Aziza Houston, Morgan Jasper, Claudine Jasper)

Stephanie Berry (Claudine Jasper)

is the recipient of the 2026 Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in Performance, The Gospel at Colonus. She just appeared in a co-production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone as Bertha Holly at Indiana Repertory Company and Syracuse Stage. She appeared as Oedipus in The Gospel at Colonus at Little Island, Gem of the Ocean at Two River Theatre, Staff Meal at Playwrights Horizons, and as Olivia in Classical Theatre of Harlem’s production of Malvolio. She appeared in The Garden at La Jolla Playhouse. She is the 2023 recipient of an Obie Award for Performance, for her role in On Sugarland at New York Theatre Workshop, and an Obie Award for her solo show, The Shaneequa Chronicles: The Making of a Black Woman. Selected film and TV credits include Fantasy Island, O.G., The Last O.G., Bull, Blue Bloods, Blacklist and all the Law & Order shows. She is the recipient of the 2022 New Professional Theatre’s Award for Activism, and the 2021 League of Professional Theatre Women’s Lee Reynolds Award. She has a one-person play on the life of Claudette Colvin.

Sean Boyce Johnson he/him (Solomon “Junior” Jasper)

Derrick Parker (Understudy: Solomon “Sonny” Jasper)

This is Derrick’s first assignment at La Jolla Playhouse. He brings with him stage work that includes, Othello (Othello and Roderigo), Hamlet (Claudius); Topdog/Underdog (Lincoln), The Cherry Orchard (Lopakin), Miss Evers’ Boys (Caleb Humphries), The Boys Next Door (Lucien P. Smith). Some of his on-camera credits include Law & Order, Unsolved Mysteries and General Hospital. Growing up in Greenville, NC, Derrick studied acting at East Carolina University; then later at the University of San Diego/The Old Globe (MFA Acting); and Mount St. Mary’s University – LA (MFA Film Production). Derrick was writer/director/producer for the feature film From Faith to Freedom and has had several short films in film festivals.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Playwright)

is a writer and theatre artist whose plays include Purpose, Appropriate, The Comeuppance, Girls, Everybody, War, Gloria, Appropriate, An Octoroon and Neighbors. He is a Professor in the Practice at Yale University and serves as Vice President of the Dramatists Guild council. He has been the recipient of two Tony awards, a Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur fellowship, the Windham-Campbell Prize for Drama, and the inaugural Tennessee Williams Award.


Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (Director)

is a San Diego-based director whose work has been celebrated for its boldness, creativity, and commitment to diverse storytelling. Delicia has directed Derecho, The Garden, Hoopla! (POP Tour), and #Super Shiny Sara (POP Tour) for La Jolla Playhouse. Other credits include The Old Globe, Denver Center, Alley Theatre, South Coast Rep, New Jersey Rep, Utah Shakespeare, Theatre Squared, Island City Stage, Two River Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Theatre Calgary, Round House Theatre, Center Rep, Cygnet, Diversionary, New Village Arts, Playwrights Project and San Diego REP, among others.
